The Indian Residential Schools were of network of boarding
schools for Native Canadians, funded by the Canadian government’s Indian
Affairs and Northern Development, and administered by Christian
churches. The goal was assimilation of First Nations children into the
dominant (white) Canadian culture. It is estimated that about 30% of
native children – 150,000 were placed in residential schools nationally.
Roughly 3,000 of those students died in the schools – mostly from
disease. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada was part of
an overall holistic and comprehensive response to the Indian residential
school legacy. It was officially established in June 2008, and
completed in June, 2015.
