David Chernushenko is a globetrotting child of diplomats, ambitious journalist, environmental activist, self-taught filmmaker and novelist and accidental politician.  His new book, "Why we should stand with underdogs" was a result of his Aunt Raya sharing a family history with him, inspiring him to do a deep dive into his Ukrainian roots with reflections on how his own life has unfolded.  Unfortunately the recording of today's talk does not start at the beginning because of a technical problem.

Claire Tuckanow is the coordinator of the Building Safer Communities Fund and the Growing Young Movers program. The young people attending the program have recently been learning to sew ribbon skirts at the mâmawêyatitân centre. The Growing Young Movers program is open to young people of all backgrounds and cultures.

Florence Stratton, a well-loved community activist outlines the causes of the current rise in people who are no longer housed. In this flourishing province, hundreds survive on the street and many people are on the edge of being without a place to live. WHY? How could governments reduce houselessness? What can communities do about housing insecurity? What can we do to alleviate the suffering of those living “on the street”?

October 10th  is World Homeless Day, a time to advocate for improved policies and funding that could help prevent and end ‘houselessness.

We proudly claim Canada is a democracy with citizens as the foundation. It is citizens that have a vote and can demand their voice be heard. As Canadian citizens, do we practice all our democratic responsibilities? Do we insist democracy be  maintained by enforcing laws and demanding public policies be re-shaped so that all have equal opportunities?   International Democracy Day (September 15) reminds us that every citizen has an important role. Jane Knox reflects on our concept of Democracy and invites discussion.
